Grupo Tequilero Mexico

Desdeya is a partnership with Grupo Tequilero Mexico, or GTM, a family run distillery in Arandas in Los Altos – the highlands of Jalisco. Every Tequila distillery is designated a NOM number by the CRT – a code which you will find on every bottle of Tequila. GTM is NOM 1468.

The distillery belongs to the Gonzales Family, and is not their first foray into the industry. Juan Antonio Gonzalez built his first facility as a contract distillery to supply the big blenders – mostly Jose Cuevo. This was good and reliable business but didn’t allow Juan Antonio to create the sort of tequila he was passionate about. So he sold that distillery and used the proceeds to start work on a new site where he could turn his hand to high quality, additive free Tequila.

Very sadly, Juan Antonio died before the distillery was finished, leaving his wife Irma and their daughter Esme to take charge of the family business. This was a steep a learning curve full of difficulties compiled by grief, but Irma and Esme continued what Juan Antonio had started, and in 2020 the new distillery began operations.

Their commitment to quality and additive free production had won them business and accolades. They’re constantly expanding to keep up with demand, and they’re rated #8 of 201 distilleries on the Taste Tequila website.

They currently produce for 7 brands, and while all of their tequilas share a family resemblance, they are all unique in their specification – distinguished by yeast varietal, duration of roast, and bottled ABV. We spent over a year finalising the specification of Dedeya. It was a pleasure to work with Esme and Irma, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.
